《華盛頓郵報》指出，新年時，Nikki Mael特別為她的4隻巴哥犬加菜，餵了牠們一罐Evanger最暢銷的牛肉罐頭「Hunk of Beef」，不料15分鐘之內，4隻狗就有如喝醉酒，走路搖晃，甚至倒地不起，Mael立刻將牠們送醫，不幸的是還是有一隻回天乏術。
毒理學家在狗的胃裡和肉罐中，都檢測出一種安樂死藥物「巴比妥酸鹽」的成分，因而被視為非常緊急的事故。由家族經營的Evanger公司得知消息後，先是向Mael致意，並捐贈美金5800給Mael作為醫療費用，同時啟動調查，隨後才做出主動回收去年6月同批生產的牛肉罐頭的決議。
這批肉罐遭汙染的原因至今未明，但《華盛頓郵報》推論最有可能的原因，是遭到安樂死的動物，又被製成了食品，根據美國食品藥物管理局FDA在2002年做的一份報告顯示，巴比妥酸鹽一旦進入動物體內，並不會隨著轉化為飼料的過程而消失。

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is advising pet owners and caretakers not to feed their pets certain lots of Evanger’s canned Hunk of Beef or Against the Grain Grain Free Pulled Beef with Gravy canned dog food after unopened cans from both brands were found to contain pentobarbital, a barbiturate. Pentobarbital is a drug that is used in animal euthanasia. It should not be in pet food and its presence as detected by the FDA in these products renders them adulterated.
